Vision
At Robert Shaw, our curriculum aims to reflect the rich diversity of our community and builds upon our school values of being respectful, responsible and resilient. Our vision is to deliver an engaging and purposeful curriculum that encourages pupils to become curious, motivated and resilient learners equipped with the knowledge and skills to achieve and thrive as citizens of Nottingham, the United Kingdom and the world.
Our curriculum vision will be achieved by:
– having access to rich, first-hand experiences through visits and visitors;
– developing communication and oracy through vocabulary-rich teaching;
– developing positive reciprocal relationships between peers and adults;
– having a clear understanding of the global community within which they live and learn;
– engaging and interacting with high quality texts.
Throughout the academic year, there will be many opportunities for all pupils to work together on mini topics such as ‘Our Values’ week.
For more information about our curriculum at Robert Shaw, please contact Mr Denman (Deputy Headteacher) via the school office.
Robert Shaw follows the National Curriculum 2014, and aims to meet the curriculum objectives through a creative and engaging ‘big question’ based approach. Please follow the link below to the National Curriculum objectives:

We underpin our work to develop our children’s global perspective through the Oxfam Global Citizenship Curriculum which informs the global dimension we aim to bring to our teaching and learning. Please click the link below for more information about the Oxfam curriculum:
Reading at Robert Shaw
The teaching of reading is at the heart of our curriculum. We teach phonics daily to all pupils in EYFS and KS1, using the Read Write Inc scheme. For more information please visit the Read Write Inc website or speak with Mrs Amoabil our Key Stage 1 phase leader via the school office.
Shared reading sessions with a focus on fluency and comprehension are a daily feature of the Key stage 2 curriculum.
Curriculum Organisation
In September 2021, we embarked on a reviewed curriculum journey. Our curriculum design took into account the views of staff, parents and children. We retained the most successful elements of our previous curriculum and introduced new and exciting aspects.
Our curriculum has been reviewed to give greater emphasis on developing our children’s deeper knowledge and understanding over a longer period of time – all of our topics last for one term.
We have three distinct themes during the course of the year and within each theme we develop and embed the Oxfam Global Citizenship curriculum:
Autumn – we develop children’s understanding of belonging in its many forms. One of the key drivers for this term is PSHE. We link this to ‘Identity and Diversity’ and ‘Social Justice and Equity’.
Spring – we develop children’s understanding of exploring. One of the key drivers for this term is Geography. We link this to ‘Sustainable Development’ and ‘Globalisation and Interdependence’.
Summer – we develop children’s understanding of discovering. One of the key drivers for this term is History. We link this to ‘Peace and Conflict’.
