Mathematics

Vision

We believe that a Mastery approach to teaching Maths will ensure that all our pupils are helped to develop a lifelong love of learning through experiential and well structured lessons that help to deepen pupils’ thinking skills, develop confidence and fluency. Our pupils are actively encouraged to reason, questioning and exploring mathematical problems. We believe that mastering maths means acquiring a deep, long term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject. We are developing teaching approaches that give pupils the best chance of securing both deep understanding of mathematical concepts and fluency in applying them.

Mastery in maths, according to the National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM)means:

  • pupils acquiring a deep, long term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject
  • The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths
  • Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material

White Rose Hub curriculum

At Robert Shaw we teach mathematics daily from Nursery to Year 6 with the White Rose Hub curriculum resources as the core of our curriculum.

White Rose Hub parents and pupils resources are available here – 1 minute maths is really popular and free to download. Hover over the parents and pupils tab to find it and more.

We are also part of the NCETM’s mastering number projects for Reception/Key Stage 1 and the Key Stage 2 project. This means an additional daily session focused on all children mastering core aspects of number.

Daily Times tables and Homework

Children from Year 2 to Year 6 practice their times tables in class every day. They use a range of resources for this including Emile on their iPads. Emile education is a learning platform that we also use to set homework for mathematics every week.

The Emile website can be reached here
