Design & Technology

Vision

At Robert Shaw, our vision for Design and Technology as a practical and inspiring subject which allows imagination and creativity at all ages. Design and Technology draws upon a range of real-life contexts and build upon existing, age appropriate knowledge to develop logical thinking to solve real world problems.

Through Design and Technology, we aim to combine innovative approaches to achieve a functional end product, with an element of risk taking. Allowing mistakes along the way generates opportunity for evaluation. Children will develop a sense of resilience and self-reflection through the evaluative stages. Design and Technology focuses on depth of knowledge and skill rather than breadth of outcomes.

We strive to ensure Design and Technology is recognised as an integrated subject which produces outcomes that are clearly distinguishable from art and craft outcomes. Our children carefully consider the product requirements and target audience for a successful invention. Rigorous planning makes use of the Design and Technology Associations Projects on a Page resources and carefully designed lessons ensures children are clear about what they are designing and who it is for. This is followed by the reasoning process which highlights the purpose of the product. The projects conclude with an evaluation stage which develops oracy and communication skills.
