Music

Vision

The National Curriculum for a aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • Perform, listen to, review and evaluate music
  • Be taught to sing, create and compose music
  • Understand and explore how music is created, produced and communicated.

At Robert Shaw, the intention is that children gain a firm understanding of what music is through listening, singing, playing, evaluating, analysing, and composing across a wide variety of styles, traditions, and musical genres. Our objective is to develop a curiosity for the subject, through exposure of fundamental music skills combined with exposure to music from the wider world, both past and present.

We know that music is an evolving artform and requires a variety of skills, as well as being reflective of the diversity of society. We are committed to ensuring children understand the value and importance of music in the wider community, and are able to use their musical skills, knowledge, and experiences to involve themselves in music, in a variety of different contexts.

The Robert Shaw Primary School Choir

We have an truly top class choir. It has been one of THE standout feature of our curriculum (not just music) for many years. The indefatigable Mrs Amoabil, accompanied by Mrs Olson, Miss Horton and an ensemble of adults trek around Nottingham and to Wembley regularly to perform at corporate and community events frequently. The choir is enormous and so many children reap the benefits of the opportunities being part of the choir presents. The hours spent honing performances is enough to make the heart sing! Nottingham Music Hub: Strings tuition

From September 2025, we have all of our Year 4 pupils being taught strings by Nottingham Music Hub every week with access for small group tuition alongside this.

Musician of the Month

We are a Musician of the Month partner school. This is a fantastic resource which brings a world of music to our children through assemblies and classroom activities. As we go through the extensive cycles of musicians and musical genre, the children learn about the different cultural influences and the impact of each musician has had through history and around the world. This is one of those rare resources which engages and enthuses to high degree, deepening their love of music of every kind.
